Recent Projects
- Wind energy site screening and pre-planning work - North Energy is helping a wind developer to identify sites in industrial areas for the siting of wind turbines. The Feed in Tariff payments system has made smaller wind energy developments viable on sites with a good electrical load. North Energy’s wind planning expertise is coming to the fore.
- Integrated design for demonstration of efficient liquefaction of hydrogen (IDEALHY) - North Energy is taking part in a two year collaborative project supported by the European Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU). There are 9 partners drawn from industry and academia. The aim is to develop a generic process design, leading to a strategic plan, for a prospective large scale demonstration of efficient hydrogen liquefaction at a scale of 30-50 te/day. North Energy is carrying out a life cycle assessment of the process focusing on primary energy and three prominent greenhouse gases: carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide.
- Energy efficiency survey of plant rooms - North Energy carried out a detailed audit of heating valve and pipework insulation for a North East local authority. Thirty plant rooms were visited, ranging from nurseries to care homes, libraries to leisure centres and every uninsulated valve quantified. The purpose is to help achieve a low cost, "quick win" to reduce the council's carbon emissions.
- Community renewable energy options - North Energy recently completed a renewable energy options study for a community trust covering four parishes in rural Northumberland. The study looked at the potential for community wind energy, solar PV including "solar barns", biomass for heat and power, and hydro. The community's buildings: schools, churches and community centres were assessed for the potential for renewables including solar PV and solar water heating.

Glyndebourne Turbine official launch
2012-01-10: North Energy's planning consultants Nicola & Adrian Smith will attend the official switch on of the Glyndebourne Turbine in Sussex on January 20th. The ceremony, lead by the world famous TV environmentalist Sir David Attenborough brings together all the people who made the project happen. North Energy led the project through the planning process and the difficult Public Inquiry, ending in planning permission being granted.
Workshop in Life Cycle Assessment
2012-01-04: An introductory workshop was held on 13th December in the Doctoral Training Centre in Low Carbon Technologies at Leeds University. The Doctoral Training Centre spans a range of disciplines and faculties across the University and the workshop was attended by researchers from energy engineering, climate economics, transport studies and future fuels. The purpose of the workshop was to give PhD students an overview of why and how to carry out a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Aspects considered were:
- The drivers for LCA,
- The importance of the ISO 14040 series of standards,
- The five phases of an LCA,
- Issues to be aware of, particularly how legitimate different methodological choices may give rise to substantially different results and
- The importance of transparency.
Upper Coquetdale Off Grid Study Completed
2011-11-25: North Energy has completed a thorough study of 21 off grid properties in Upper Coquetdale. This region, in the Northumberland National Park, is one the most remote areas of England, and is part of the MoD’s Otterburn Ranges. After completing full Energy Performance Certificates for each property, the potential for energy saving and renewable energy was assessed. As well as substantial increases in the insulation levels of the houses, renewable energy technologies such as micro-wind turbines, solar PV, micro-hydro, biomass and solar thermal have excellent prospects to reduce the energy bills and the carbon footprints of these homes.
