North Energy are pleased to announce the launch of their new Training Programme. Please find below details of forthcoming events for 2010/11; for further details please click the title links. The company has a team of experienced trainers who have collaborated to deliver a series of relevant, up to the minute courses.
Training Courses 2010-11
Introduction to Life Cycle AssessmentLife cycle assessment (LCA) is key to understanding the environmental impact of goods and services. It is a relatively new science and so is developing all the time. This has led to some confusion and conflicting claims regarding the environmental credentials of, for example, the liquid biofuels. If you are interested in learning about LCA and being able to understand and evaluate ‘green’ claims, then this comprehensive one day course will provide you with a good overview of the methods and issues. You will learn about the drivers for performing LCAs, gain an understanding of how LCAs are carried out, see how legitimate differences in approach may result in very different answers, become aware of LCA tools and inventories and how LCA may be used in process and product design.
As this is an introductory course, no prior knowledge is assumed. To enable you to make the most of your time, the course will be run in an informal manner with plenty of time for discussion and questions. Follow up courses are planned and if you would like to receive further information about these please register your interest.
Introduction to Carbon Management for Business and Commerce
Carbon management is becoming increasingly important for all organisations as a result of increasing concerns over the effects of global warming and directives and initiatives arising from this, for example the UK’s Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme. If you are interested in learning how to measure and manage your organisation’s carbon emissions then this comprehensive one day course will give you a good starting point for action. You will learn about the drivers for change, gain an understanding of how the carbon emissions from your organisation can be measured, get an overview of the key steps in carbon management and be able to make a good case for investment for taking action on carbon emissions.
As this is an introductory course, no prior knowledge is assumed. To enable you to make the most of your time, the course will be run in an informal manner with plenty of time for discussion and questions. Course Dates
A new series of dates is currently in preparation.
In Autumn 2010, the team will be delivering a series of training events specifically aimed at University postgraduate students.

Onesmus Mwabonje BSc PhD
Onesmus has a BSc in Chemistry from Jomo Kenyatta University, Kenya and an MSc in Environmental Strategy from the University of Surrey, where his dissertation looked at the application of LCA in waste management and disposal. He joined North Energy Associates in August 2009 after working for nearly 2 years as a Research Associate at Loughborough University, on an EU integrated project (NATURALHY), looking at Life Cycle and Socio-economic assessment of the existing Natural Gas Systems as a catalyst for the Hydrogen Economy. His work involved modelling and producing LCA workbooks for various energy technologies currently being used within the EU. He also contributed towards training project partners in applying LCA approaches. He holds a PhD in Water and Environmental Health Engineering from University of Surrey, where his thesis focused on sustainable systems of wastewater treatment. Onesmus is an associate member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA).

Carly Whittaker BSc (Hons) MSc
Carly has gained experience with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) over the past three years working as a Research Associate at Imperial College London, and has further developed these skills in a recent move to North Energy Associates in March 2009. She has a BSc in Biology, and MSc in Forestry Protection and Conservation, both at Imperial College London.
At North Energy, Carly works on designing and constructing LCAs for energetic and greenhouse gas balances. Her work involves examining commodities from agricultural and forest sectors, such as food crops, bioenergy and forest crops and residues, and their eventual conversion to either heat, electricity, biofuels or biomaterials. She is also interested in LCA methodology and developing specialist LCA tools for presenting LCA results in a transparent and meaningful way.
